Quilt #80

Back in January I took a class from Ruth Blanchet called Knot of Squares at the Academy of Quilting. I opted to make a totally scrappy queen size quilt which required that I cut 2025 2 inch squares! Wow - that was a lot of squares! Then to put it all together, I sewed various nine patches per the instructions and then sewed the nine patches together and voila the knot of squares appears! I finished the top in a timely manner BUT then it sat. And sat. I finally out the triple border on and quilted it on my friend's long arm. Even though people say you can quilt a queen size quilt on a sewing machine, I think they are crazy. I am very glad that Marie has a long arm. I used a queen size sheet for the backing - I've heard both sides of that argument but I really didn't want to have to pice a back for this one. Seems to have worked fine - we'll see how it holds up. Just glad that it is finished and ready to sleep under come October!

Quilt #79

My neighbor, Helen, needed a quilt for her boss's daughter who is having her first baby in August. Helen has known the daughter for a long time. The colors she wanted were pale lavender, pale gray and white. I did a good job of sticking to the color scheme, but personally I think babies need bright colors! It is pretty and girlie but kind of washed out. The baby's initials will be CAK so I personalized it by putting her initials on the back of the quilt.

Quilt # 78

This is my first finish since starting the blog - could have finished it a while ago if I had not been trying to get all the quilts on a blog.  One of mt friends got a long arm.  I had never used one before - had always used my sewing machine.  I've really never been a big fan of all over meander quilting but it sure is easy!  I'd like to learn how to do more with the long arm - I guess I need to make a bunch of smallish quilts and just practice when Marie is not using her long arm.  I made this quilt for my son - I had seen the pattern at a quilt shop and liked it.  I like how it turned out.  I pieced the back, too, and I like it too.  I decided to take another shortcut (the quilt is for my son so it's okay) too - I machine sewed the binding.  It worked just fine.

Wow - all caught up

Okay - those are the quilts I have finished up to this moment in time. I have may works in progress and numerous UFOs. Hopefully, from now on I can post as things are finished or even post some that are in progress!

Quilt # 77

Since I made a second quilt for Ron and Helen, I had to make another for Jim and Kathe. They really are the best neighbors anyone could ask to have. Kathe is a gardener - she keeps trying to make me into one but she is fighting a losing battle! So I made her the only kind of garden that I am interested in. The patterns for the flowers came from Ruth Blanchet - the Bargello teacher.

I even put a label on this quilt - I am very bad about not putting labels on my quilts.

Quilt # 76

I made a second quilt for my neighbors, Ron and Helen. I like to sew and I seem to have a lot of quilts, so I need to give some away. Easy make with charm pack and jelly roll!

Quilt # 75

My niece, Julie, had her kids before I started quilting so her kids didn't get quilts like their cousins did. So I decided that Julie needed a quilt!

Now the pictures are sideways! Maybe I haven't defeated technology!

Quilt # 74

My friend Scherry recently moved from Texas to Colorado and I thought she needed a little reminder of Texas. Gave it to her for Christmas 2013.

Quilt # 73

Another Quilt University class - Give and Take Appliqué. This was my first attempt at free motion quilting on my sewing machine. Felt like I managed pretty well.

Quilt # 72

One of my daughter's best friends - a friend since kindergarten - was having her first baby. Found out about the shower about a week before it was to happen. Dug into my stash and made chevron quilt - this time with half square triangles. I also made some burp clothes for her.

The problem with having more than one computer - picture is not here - I will have to edit this one too. Found it. Some still not where they should be!

Quilts # 69 & 70 & 71

Charlie and Owen have little brothers! Yes, my nice has had 4 boys in just a smidgen over 3 years! Andrew and Benjamin joined the family a few weeks after Charlie's 3rd birthday! I was in such a hurry to get the quilts to her that I forgot to get pictures. I'm glad that I had taken one picture when they were works in progress.

Have to edit this one too - pictures are not here. Found the only picture of these that I have and the two in the back were not even finished.

Quilt # 68

Elijah was going to have a little brother so I had to make a quilt for him. I've known his mother and grandmother for close to 40 years! I saw this puppy dog quilt and thought it waould be perfect. They had just had to put their dog to sleep so one of the dogs is named after him. All the dogs are named after real dogs - most of them dogs that Karen would know.

Can't find the pics right now - I will have to edit this one. Well, I found this one picture of Titus on his quilt on Christmas Day. The others are in here but I can't get them to the blog - still working! Found one more. Making progress,

Quilt # 67

I started making hexagons with the thought of making a queen size quilt for my guest room. I was making the squares individually already sandwiched. I hand drew and cut the leaves and I used quarter inch ribbon for the stems. At some point I decided that I really didn't want to make that many hexagon flowers! I was taking a string piecing class at Quilt U at the time ( a UFO for another time) and thought that I could improvise and make some of the blocks half string pieced. I really like the way it turned out. I quilted a hexagon flower shape in the white side of the string pieced blocks. Once again - as with my world cruise t-shirt quilt it is rag quilted to the back.

Quilt # 66

Since I was making quilts for the girlies, I couldn't forget the boy. Since he is also enamored of trains I figured he could use a train quilt. Maybe one that was a little less girly!

Quilts # 64 & 65

The girlies wanted some rainbow quilts. I decided to do a chevron pattern. I did quarter square triangles. I was about half way through the second quilt when I had an epiphany - they would have been a lot easier with larger half square triangle!! They turned out pretty though - and the girls liked them. That is all that matters!

I have single pictures of them someplace but can't find them at the moment.

Success!, glad when I can finally defeat technology!

Quilt # 63

My neighbor, Helen, needed a quilt for a friend's baby. Made a nice hour-glass quilt. I really liked the material I chose.

Quilt # 62

Another Quilt University class that I took was Wheel of Mystery. For this quilt I had to fussy cut material and match up layers kind of like a stack-n-whack but to tell you the truth I would have to go back to the class notes to really remember the process. Glad I have notebooks full of the print out from the classes! I like the finished quilt. If you look closely, you can see the "wheels".
